Each of these 4-week-long online courses is taught by well-known and familiar experts from within our own GIScience community. Since the early 2000s, The Institute for Statistics Education (statistics.com) has been known for providing solid, rigorous short courses on a wide range of statistics and data science topics.  Their classes have always been offered online (asynchronous), with three main elements: weekly lessons with assigned readings, a private discussion board for students & the instructor, and homework assignments that will receive instructor feedback. Mapping in R next runs from June 4 – July 2, 2021.  Christopher Brunsdon, Professor of Geocomputation at Ireland’s Maynooth University, has led this course since 2013.  His reputation in this field is prominent and global, with book publications including An Introduction to R for Spatial Analysis and Mapping (2014, authored with Lex Comber) and Geocomputation: a Practical Primer (2015, authored with Alex Singleton).

The next instance of Spatial Statistics for GIS Using R will take place July 9 – August 6, 2021.  David Unwin (Professor Emeritus at Birkbeck College, University of London) is the instructor for Spatial Statistics, a class he has been leading on this platform since 2005. His expertise in this field and as an educator is award-winning, and many continue to rely on his publications (such as Geographic Information Analysis, 2^nd edition 2010, co-authored with David O’Sullivan) as key teaching and learning resources.
