Luc Anselin

Dr. Luc Anselin, Regents' Professor and Walter Isard Chair at Arizona State University is an elected member of the United States National Academy of Sciences and a William Alonso awardee, a Walter Isard recipient for distinguished scholarship, and  a Fellow of the Regional Science Association International.  As Director of the GeoDa Center for Geospatial Analysis and Computation at ASU, he is a spatial scientist with an admirable international reputation.  His popular software, GeoDa, developed over a number of years, is a sophisticated, interactive tool used by serious researchers interested in developing exploratory and confirmatory models that are based on the use of georeferenced data.   He is expert in the integration of GIS with spatial analytic tools.  He is often called upon by practitioners in many disciplines to advise on modeling and GIS development strategies.  His user e-mail site is an essential vehicle for monitoring the latest developments in spatial analysis.

Luc Anselin is a leading world scholar among geographers, economists, and planners in the world on the subject of spatial econometrics.    His contributions to a better understanding of a complex topic are profound.  He recognizes the shortcomings of work dealing with spatial series, and makes both methodological and theoretical suggestions for improvements.  He uses the most advanced computer technology with ease and effectiveness.  His expertise on public issues like housing and water availability is first rate.  His work in these areas is thorough, effective, and of the highest quality.

Anselin's book, Spatial Econometrics: Methods and Models, is a landmark.  His work on model misspecification is de rigueur for spatial econometricians, and his development of local statistics and the analysis of panel models have been cited approximately 10,000 times.  The GeoDa Center, his creation, is a cutting-edge institute for advanced geo-spatial research and GIS.  Earlier he led similar schools of spatial science at the University of West Virginia, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and the University of Texas at Dallas.  His Ph.D. is from Cornell University.

For his remarkable work in the spatial sciences, which includes sophisticated research, the creation of fine, user-friendly software, and outstanding academic leadership, the University Consortium for Geographic Information Science is proud to award Luc Anselin with Fellowship status.
