Building on UCGIS’s earlier published research agenda, the 2016 Symposium explored new GIScience research challenges that intersect with emerging, cutting-edge questions in the humanities, the social, physical, or health sciences, or engineering. Meeting these grand challenges will require new strategies and infrastructures for collaboration and research. Through the GIS&T Body of Knowledge (BoK), UCGIS has played a key role in developing a framework for GIScience education and knowledge management. This year we considered collective efforts that will help transform GIScience research. Are there community-wide needs that could benefit from overarching organization and momentum, such as that provided to the biological sciences by the Gene Ontology (GO) project that facilitated rapid and structured sharing of research results? What infrastructure or resources can facilitate productive collaboration within the inter- and multi-disciplinary research teams so strongly promoted by today’s research agencies? And within this collaborative framework, how can individual scholars formulate successful research careers? Join your senior and early career colleagues to explore strategies for transforming our individual and collective research agenda as we look to the future.

The 2016 Symposium took place Tuesday May 24 - Thursday May 26, 2016, in Scottsdale, Arizona, at the iconic Hotel Valley Ho.  For more information, please review the final report (pdf)
