Workshop 1: Teaching Critical, Open, and Reproducible GIScience

  • Description:  This half-day workshop will introduce participants to teaching a fusion of critical GIS and open, reproducible GIScience. The presenters will provide an overview of their pedagogy, share syllabi and samples of lessons and exercises fromtheir own GIScience teaching, and provide tips and training on implementing similar exercises and approaches. Participants will work through a pair of class exercises, drawn from prior course offerings, which were designed to connect critical GIS with R&R.

In a first exercise, participants will attempt to reproduce a published study of household resilience in Malawi. The presenters will guide participants through the reproduction and highlight how R&R practices facilitate the critical evaluation of the publication, while also creating new avenues of inquiry.

In a second exercise, participants will develop simple, reproducible spatial analysis scripts to investigate urban vulnerability and resilience in Dar es Salaam through the open data Ramani Huria project (published in OpenStreetMap) and open education Resilience Alliance projects in Tanzania. The presenters will discuss how this exercise not only introduced students to open and reproducible citizen science, but also allowed them to contribute to an ongoing urban resiliency development project by extending its successes in data creation to spatial analysis.
As both exercises have already been used in university teaching, the presenters will provide information about prior outcomes, student response, and tips on developing similar materials in your own teaching.

  • Time & Date: Thursday, May 28, 2020, in the morning (8 am - 12 pm)
  • Location: Hawaii Pacific University, Aloha Tower Marketplace, Room TBA
  • Requirements: Participants will need to 1) bring their own laptops and 2) have the current version of QGIS installed on that laptop.
  • Instructors: Peter Kedron (Arizona State University) and Joseph Holler (Middlebury College)
  • Fees: this workshop is free for anyone who is registered for the Symposium AND affiliated with a UCGIS member institution. Otherwise, there is a $75 fee to participate that will be invoiced and must be paid no less than 2 weeks prior to the workshop.

Workshop 2: Multi-Scaled Geographically Weighted Regression

  • Description:  The overall goal of this workshop is to introduce participants to multiscale spatial modeling and engage in a detailed discussion of the scale of geographic processes and their measurement. Multiscale Geographically Weighted Regression (MGWR) is a cutting-edge modeling technique which integrates both nomothetic and ideographic approaches in geography and allows a more nuanced interpretation of place and space.
The workshop will consist of three parts. In the first part, the presenter will provide a discussion on the biases often introduced in local models due to insufficient consideration of process scale and the methodology employed in the development of MGWR to overcome it. Building on this foundation, participants will then be guided through a worked example implementing a hedonic housing price model for Seattle, WA. The presenter will guide participants through hypothesis formation, development of the spatial model, and implementation of that model in the open-source MGWR software. The presenter will then introduce the various outputs obtained from fitting the model and will explain the interpretation of the results. In the final part of the workshop, the presenter will demonstrate a visualization protocol developed as a Python based Jupyter Notebook that will allow participant to graphically display results. The presenter will conclude the workshop with a short discussion on other examples applying the technique and future research avenues and invite participants to work with their own datasets.

The MGWR software is free to download (MGWR software) and workshop datasets will be made available to participants prior to the workshop. In addition, the presenter will make available all Jupyter Notebooks used during the workshop (e.g. the visualization protocol) to facilitate future participant application/exploration with the software.

  • Time & Date: Thursday May 28, 2020, in the afternoon (1:00 - 5:00 pm)
  • Location: Hawaii Pacific University, Aloha Tower Marketplace, Room TBA
  • Requirements: Participants will need to 1) bring their own laptops and 2) have the MGWR software installed on that laptop.
  • Instructors: Mehak Sachdeva (Arizona State University)
  • Fees: this workshop is free for anyone who is registered for the Symposium AND affiliated with a UCGIS member institution. Otherwise, there is a $75 fee to participate that will be invoiced and must be paid no less than 2 weeks prior to the workshop.

Workshop 3: Spatiotemporal Big Data Analytics for Human Dynamics Research

  • Description:  This workshop will focus on the introduction of some recent research approaches and analytical tools for Spatiotemporal Big Data Analytics of human dynamics research, such as human mobility, information diffusion modeling over space and time, connections between online activities and real-world human behaviors, and knowledge discovery and machine learning tools.  It also will provide an opportunity of building a community of researchers who are interested in pursuing human dynamics research for smart and connected communities.  During the workshop, participants will learn about human dynamics research frontiers and gain hands-on experiences of using data and tools developed from research projects conducted by the instructors.
  • Time & Date: Thursday, May 28, 2020, in the afternoon (1:00 pm - 5:00 pm)
  • Location: Hawaii Pacific University, Aloha Tower Marketplace, Room TBA

Workshop 4: Hands-on with the Hour of Cyberinfrastructure for GIScience

  • Description:  The Hour of CI project is a nationwide campaign introducing hundreds of diverse undergraduate and graduate students to cyberinfrastructure and building their cyberliteracy in GIScience. Modeled on the "Hour of Code,” and with NSF support, the Hour of CI project is developing 17 interactive, online lessons for students and creating supplementary curriculum materials for instructors. The project lowers the barrier to entry for educators and students by building on a science gateway called the GISandbox to provide a cyberinfrastructure-enabled training environment accessible through a web browser for all Hour of CI lessons. This workshop will explain the framework within which these lessons are being developed and demo the first round of lessons. Participants will be invited to apply to pilot test these lessons in their own classrooms as part of the second phase and further lesson development activities.
