Our pre-Symposium Workshops will be held on Monday May 22, 2017.  Workshops are FREE for individuals from UCGIS member institutions who are also registered to attend the Symposium. For anyone not attending the Symposium, or not from a member institution, the fees are $50 for a half-day workshop and $75 for a full-one.

If you plan to take only a Workshop and not participate in the Symposium, you can register here.  Otherwise, workshop registration can take place at the same time as the Symposium registration.  Spaces are limited so we encourage you to register early.

3) Collaborative Problem Solving with CyberGIS
  • Description: Participants from our 2017 Summer School will be working this day on their ongoing activities.
  • Sponsor: National Science Foundation
  • Eligibility: This 1-day Workshop is only for participants in the UCGIS 2017 Summer School

He is President-Elect of UCGIS, and a current member of the Board on Earth Sciences and Resources of the U.S. National Academies.

4) Machine Learning for Geospatial Data Scientists
  • DescriptionIn this workshop, participants will learn about modern machine learning algorithms and hpc (Apache spark) frameworks for analyzing big geospatial data (emphasis on very high-resolution remote sensing imagery). Topics include probabilistic models, semi-supervised learning, multiple instance learning, active learning, and deep learning.
  • LocationHyatt Arlington hotel, meeting room TBD
  • Time & Date: 8:30 am – 12 pm  AND 1:00 pm - 5:00 pm on Monday May 22, 2017
  • Requirements: Participants must bring their own laptop computers.
  • Instructor:  Raju Vatsavai is a Chancellor’s Faculty Excellence Program Cluster Associate Professor in Geospatial Analytics in the Department of Computer Science, North Carolina State University (NCSU). He works at the intersection of spatial and temporal big data management, analytics, and high performance computing with applications in the national security, geospatial intelligence, natural resources, climate change, location-based services, and human terrain mapping. As the Associate Director of the Center for Geospatial Analytics (CGA), Raju plays a leadership role in the center’s strategic vision for spatial computing research.

5)  Real-time fusion of social media data and Census data: Methods, Tools, and Applications
  • Description: This workshop will introduce the methods and tools of real-time fusion of big data and census data. Participants will learn the methodology for real-time fusion of big data and census data, newly developed web based tools, as well as their applications for spatial studies. The workshop will discuss how big data sources, such as QQ data, can be quickly extracted, quantified, spatialized, and integrated with census data for spatial studies. Several tools will be introduced, including a web-based platform, China Geo-Explorer, to assist researchers to explore data through interactive charts, maps, and reports in real-time. Researchers could easily visualize the patterns, trends, and correlations of big data and census data in an on-demand fashion. Some case studies will be demonstrated for applications in spatial economy and population. Researchers from government agencies, research institutes, and universities will find the workshop particularly relevant.
  • Location: Hyatt Arlington hotel, meeting room TBD
